As part of my registry repair studies, I decided to test the XP Repair Pro product. You can download it for free from their website XP Repair Pro.
The XP Repair Pro is different from the others. It is not just a registry repair too. It has together an advanced registry editor, crash monitor and a startup program manager. I am particular interested in this “crash monitor” feature.
So I’ve got a free version. The first impression is ok. The GUI (Graphical User Interface) is not so easy to understand but all options are there. You will take some time to understand how to navigate through the options. Personally, I like more when the options are in Treeviews with chekboxes. Anyway as you can see (figure 1) the usability is not a strong point in XP Repair Pro.

After that I ran the XP Repair Pro scanner. I saw the errors in the “View Ignore Errors” (figure 2). Here you can choose what you want to repair or not. You can choose to repair registry, “Add/Remove Programs entries”, “ActiveX, DLL and COM Objects” without any reference or unregisted, registry deep analysis and other options.

Backup and Restore
The XP Repair Pro didn’t create anything new in this area. They use the “Windows XP System Restore”. The System Restore takes snapshots from registry and dynamic configuration files from your system and tracks all changes that happen as since a determined point. It is very important to use it before to try new softwares in your computer. The System restore is a good option to do backup/restore, because it is the standard way to do it and you do not have to figure out how it works when some problems happens. You just have to use the operational system standard solution. In the preference’s menu, you can see the backup tab. There you can configure to “Always create a System Restore Point” and maintain old backups as well.
Other features
XP Repair Pro has other features:
Optimize System: It is a defrag but focused on registry. You can choose what registry path you want to defrag and do it. It is a good thing to do after that you erased a lot of useless keys from your registry.
Registry Editor: I did not see a lot of differences from the default regedit. I just saw an advanced search, which can help you to find keys and subkeys easily and an option to copy a key full path to the clipboard.
In the website I saw others features but I think that in a free edition it is not available. How can I decide to buy a product if I can not see all the features ? I will not pay to use something that I can not decide if it will match my needs.
Final Words
The XP Repair Pro is not just a registry repair. It is a full repair suite, which repair and remove a lot of unused data from your computer. It has a good approach to backup/restore but it lacks some features in the free version.
